A YEAR OF FAITH

(1911-1978)

NATIONAL ARTIST

Last December 3, 2011, we went to Yuchengco Museum along with my block mates. The paintings in the museum are really phenomenal. It amazes me to see that a lot of Filipino artists are so talented.

One Filipino artist that really caught my attention was H. R. Ocampo, known as Hernando R. Ocampo. According to the article that I’ve read his works reflected the harsh realities of his country after the Second World War. However, many of his works are about fresh/green sceneries and the beautiful Philippine landscapes through his skillful use of fierce and bold colors. Using movement and bold colors, Ocampo utilized fantasy and science fiction as the basis for his works. His art is known as abstract compositions of natural forms that shiver, arouse and multiply.

For me, I felt like this painting has mixed emotions and it tells a story. The title itself really has a meaning to it; it expresses change, a change from good to bad. The colors are really bright and striking that it brings intensity to it. The colors and their patterns also provoke an emotion, a memory.

I can tell that this painting has negativity to it because of the colors used; Red reflects war, danger, strength, power. But in contradiction to that, yellow reflects joy, happiness, desire, passion and love.

I’m a type of person who appreciates abstract paintings though I don’t really understand some of it. By looking at it, I can feel the emotions it brings me. I can’t explain the feeling, but I know that this kind of painting has a really deeper meaning in it.
